	Industrial Age to Information Age Change

If you have been in business over twenty years or possibly if your business is relatively new, chances are that the business has been set up on the standards and methods of the Industrial Age.  While many, many businesses, yours included, do an excellent job of running the business based on Industrial Age practices, this is not going to be enough to ensure business longevity, success and profitability in the Information Age.  What do we mean?  The last major period of change that impacted business was in the late 1800's and early 1900's - the Industrial Age.  The main drivers for the Industrial Age were the invention of the telephone, electricity, the automobile and radio.  New technology is developed every seventy five to eighty years that creates an economic revolution.  This change is called a Powerwave.*  The Powerwave that propelled us in to the Industrial Age prompted enormous change in the way people lived and how they used the new technology of the day.  The Powerwave started an impressive change in peoples lives that only accelerated after WWII when rapid acceptance of new technology profoundly impacted the 20th century.  For business, the Powerwave created new companies, producing vast volumes of new products and there needed to be a process for recording, accounting, accessing and sharing large volumes of business information.  This was done using paper and the age of large volume filing and file cabinets began. FAST FORWARD TO THE INFORMATION AGE - AND WE MEAN FAST! While on average the new technologies of the Industrial Age took roughly sixty to seventy years to hit critical mass (90% acceptance and use of a technology), the technologies of the Information Age are hitting critical mass in five to ten years if not quicker.  In the last three years there has been a 73% increase in personal computers, 81% increase in internet use and a 200% increase in e-commerce.**  Remember when people were saying - what is the world wide web?  Why would I want remote access to documents?  Well that world is upon us and we are impacted by it daily.  What we do today as business owners or decision makers will impact the success, growth, longevity and profitability of our companies for ourselves or shareholders.  We must embrace new technologies that will make our businesses better, deliver higher quality products and services to our clients faster, more efficiently and make us more profitable.  We are all in business to make money.  The new technologies of the Information Age allow us to do more with less and drive the resulting savings to the bottom line.  As business owners, we must know where to go to get professional services and solutions to achieve these goals.
